Regular red wine usually is the choice of those who are inexperienced in drinking wine at a restaurant. Unfortunately, this leaves the waiters confused to which wine to pick for the customer. Because each person has a different palate, we all have different tastes.
It is important to know which kinds of red wines you like in order to better judge and appreciate wines. While some people prefer a sweeter, fruitful wine, others prefer a zingy, peppery and tangy deep red wine. Similar to white wines, reds can be classified into four main groups.
The first is best called fruity reds, because they are fairly light, pack a lot of fruit and are good for those with sweeter palates. These are often sold for around 7-8$ per bottle, so you can recognize them by their ‘cheaper’ price tags. This is not necessarily a bad thing, if you like fruity wines. Examples are Italian Valpolicellas.
A mild red is one with a medium intensity but no fruit flavors. These are usually like most Italian red wines in the $ 10 price range. A spicy red is a whine that can be fruity, but it is also very full bodied. They often have a zing to them, a peppery taste at the end. Examples are Malbecs or Dolcettos.
The last and most expensive red wines are called full bodied or powerful reds. These can cost anywhere from $ 15 upwards to a couple hundred dollars. You can find decent ones from California such as their Cabarnets or slightly more expensive such as Italian Barolo.
